Mighty by name and by talent is the exciting Hong Kong galloper Mighty Giant who is Group One bound on the back of a stellar run of form for the Ricky Yiu stable. Taking a couple of runs to find his feet when first arriving at Shatin from New Zealand, the son of Oaklands Stud's emerging stallion Power was unplaced off a wide run at his debut 12 months ago. But he quickly learned what it was all about, catching the eye with a fast-finishing second a month later and at start number three breaking through with a gutsy win over 1400m. Another second followed three weeks later since then he has proven very hard to beat. Unbeatable in fact, Mighty Giant not tasting defeat in five outings since February this year, rising through the classes with he and Zac Purton proving to be a powerful combination. February 16 was the start of the winning run, Mighty Giant striking forward from an outside gate to sit outside the leader, dashing clear from the 250m. A month later he took the lead despite finding early trouble and was always in control. And at his last run before a break he was again a dominant winner. Kicking off his current campaign with a determined victory from a wide gate, Mighty Giant was again too good second up... and now tougher tests await with the flashy chestnut due to take his place in this weekend's Gr.2 Jockey Club Mile. And from there the International races in December beckon for Mighty Giant, a horse Zac Purton has described as "an honest who gets up there, makes own luck and fights... he is a winner!" Ricky Yiu agrees.. "he takes his races so easily. He is a lovely horse to train, he has never put one step wrong." Making his way to Hong Kong on the back of two impressive trial victories in August 2018, Mighty Giant is the best foal produced by the lightly raced Ustinov mare Wanderov whose dam Caranti is a half-sister to the durable Listed winner Bonded. He hails from the second crop of Power who made the move to Oaklands Stud two years ago and it is from his sire that he has inherited his winning determination. The winner of five of his nine starts, the imposing Power was successful at the elite level at two and three, taking out the National Stakes and the Irish 1000 Guineas. Also winning the prestigious Coventry Stakes and finishing game seconds in another two Group One contests, he was both fast and classy. New Zealand's Champion First Season Sire, Power has already sired 14 stakes winners and Mighty Giant looks set to become the next! What an interesting pedigree Mighty Giant has, his dam sire Ustinov being a son of the mighty Let's Elope, granddaughter of Blushing Groom whose Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Rainbow Quest is Power's second dam sire. 20% of Power's winners boast a cross of Blushing Groom, a great stallion who hails from the same prolific family as Mill Reef, second dam sire of Power's sire Oasis Dream. Let's Elope's sire Nassipour meanwhile is a member of the influential Mumtaz Mahal family, one that strongly influences Power's pedigree via strains of Mahmoud, Royal Charger and Nasrullah. Mighty Giant's dam Wanderov carries a cross of the outstanding broodmare Malva via her Epsom Derby winning son Blenheim II and her great grandson Summertime... and Malva is ancestress of Power. What a family this has been over generations and Power hails from a particularly strong branch of it, his dam Frappe also producing the Group Two winners Curvy and Tahkafaat whilst her Group Three winning dam Glatisant is the dam of two Group One winners - Footstepsinthesand and Pedro The Great. POWER has produced his 14th Stakeswinner overnight with Helvic Dream comprehensively winning the Group 3 International Stakes over 2000m by a widening 7 Lengths margin. The Noel Meade trained 3YO gelding is out of the Danehill Dancer mare, Rachevie and has now taken his record to an impressive 10: 3-1-5, only ever being out of the placings once.
Settling towards the rear, the son of Power made smooth progress on the outer from early in the straight and swept through to lead with over a furlong to race. He stretched clear in the closing stages, going on to score easily by seven and a half lengths. Up Helly Aa, the 2/1 favourite, finished second, while Raise You (16/1) was a further four and a half lengths back in third. Meade said afterwards about Helvic Dream: "I thought he was good all year but things just haven't gone right for him with one thing and another. "I don't know where he will go next, and there is the possibility we could travel with him. He'll stick to Stakes races now". Helvic Dream continues on the outstanding run of form of Oaklands stallion Power, with this being his 23rd winner for the new season. His European progeny have been excelling this season, with Power sitting on the Leading Sires List across, Italy, France, Great Britain and Ireland. His versatility as a stallion also on show with black type success ranging from 5 furlong sprinters to 10 furlong winners. His crosses across Danehill-line mares also proving to be very potent, with great success coming from broodmare sires Exceed and Excel (Laws of Indices) and Danehill Dancer (4 runners for 4 winners & 1 SW). Power's oldest Australian-bred progeny are now yearlings and will be hitting the sales ring from January 2021 at the Magic Millions sales.
Power progeny keep winning all around the globe... from the UK to Singapore to NZ and in Australia.
Singapore Star, Mighty Giant has returned from a spell with a gritty win first up, and is destined for bigger and better races. The 5YO gelding's race record is now at 8:5-2-0, with his earnings now in excess of A$1.2M - he's a superstar!! The terrific filly, Elizabeel, has won 2 in a row for the John Sargent Racing stable and is also destined for far bigger things this preparation. Consistent winners also keep coming from across UK, Ireland & France, as well as his from his progeny of New Zelanders. Power's oldest Australian progeny are now yearlings and will be hitting the sales floor next January starting at the Magic Millions so make sure you breed yourself a Power.
Oaklands Stud leading stallion, Power, has finished off the 2019-2020 season very strongly. Producing further winners across Europe, Australia and NZ.
His strong European season form continued, with leading Two-Year-Old Laws of Indices going on to win the Group 2 Railway Stakes at The Curragh to become Power's 13th Stakeswinner. This stakes win takes him back above Spirit Of Boom and comfortably ahead of Better Than Ready for Stakes and Group Winners.
Power's results further proving what outstanding value he represents in the QLD Breeding market. The farm are very much looking forward to his first QLD-bred yearlings hitting the sales early next year. It's a perfect time to send a mare to Power.
The Oaklands Stud Farm were thrilled to see resident stallion, Power (Oasis Dream) sire his 12th stakes winner courtesy of Wakanaka’s (2f ex Storyline by Kodiac) win in the Premio Vittorio Crespi (Listed, 1200m) at Milan.
The two-year-old filly beat Fulgentia (Territories) into second with Permetti (Helmet) coming home in third. Watch the race here > Power’s stakes winners are headed by Group 2 winning pair Gift Of Power, who won the Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and La Force in the US. Having been the champion 1st and 2nd Season Sire in NZ, Power's first QLD-bred yearlings will hit the sales ring next year with great excitement. He has been very popular early in the season with bookings and is on track for a record season in the breeding barn. He will stand for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST) this season. Power has produced a swag of winners this week.....
Well it’s been a POWER-packed month already in June with a lot of relevant racing going on around the world. It has been great to watch the restart of the European racing from France to England and Ireland, the quality racing in Japan has continued and we look forward to New Zealand racing kicking off again later this week.
From an Oaklands perspective it’s been an exciting period watching the POWER progeny back racing and winning at an amazing strike rate! We also revelled in watching Neorealism’s ¾ brother, Real Impact siring his first Group 1 winner in Japan from his first crop. Power-Packed June
In Ireland, POWER has also tasted success this week with the first up successes of Powerful Ted (over 2600m) and Alexei Vronsky (over 2200m). It’s been really interesting to note the success that POWER is having not only over the short course distance, but the progeny are getting over further ground as they mature. Very exciting to see.
Closer to home NZ import Power O’Hata won again for the Hayes & Dabernig team as they now look towards black type with the improving mare. With 6 wins and 6 placings from only 22 starts she has already been terrific money spinner, however the Hayes & Dabernig team are finding plenty of improvement in her. Bjorn Baker was able to produce a win at the first start for 4YO gelding, Straight Torque. Out of an O’Reilly mare, he looks to have a nice sprinting future ahead of him. POWER'S recent strike rate since European Racing has resumed (where his most mature progeny are) is through the roof! He has produced:
There are several other very relevant points to note as we see further trends develop. He has a high strike rate of runners to winners, across many different broodmare sire lines. He has proven to be very potent with mares from Zabeel or Zabeel-line sires, he has a 100% strike rate with Danehill Dancer and Danzero, is very potent across Sadler’s Wells and son, Montjeu.
NEOREALISM’S Three-Quarter brother captures Group 1 Success
Latest highlights....
Excitement at the farm recently watching Neorealism's 3/4 brother, Real Impact, siring his first Group 1 winner from his first crop in Japan. Lauda Sion captured the feature NK Mile for 3 year olds over the 1600m.
With Real Impact not standing in Australia this season, Neorealism is your chance to access this successful bloodline and a great opportunity for QLD breeders. Bookings open now. We are excited to confirm that our two resident stallions, Power and Neorealism, will again serve at Oaklands Stud for the 2020 season. Their service fees will also remain unchanged as Oaklands remains committed to offering these outstanding stallions at competitive pricing. “The Oaklands roster for 2020 provides arguably the most credentialled racehorses to ever stand in QLD. International superstars on the track, the highly promising young sires provide a terrific blend of pure power and speed with athleticism and stamina. We believe both stallions are particularly well suited to the Australian and specifically the QLD breeding landscape” commented Stud Principal, Neville Stewart. Alistair Stewart, Stud Co-Principal, stated, “We have been delighted with how well the progeny of Power have continued to perform on the track and with the support that Neorealism continues to receive, however we remain aware that these are challenging times for everyone. As such, we have priced our stallions with the view to offering value to breeders, many of whom are returning clients. We are also very conscious to leave good margin for breeders, and we want to see them do well selling and racing Oaklands stallions. That equates to return business over the long term.” Below is some greater information on our two stallions on the roster for 2020, and our thoughts for the moment on their 2020 service fees:
