PEDIGREE
Chateau Istana is one of three winning foals of MISS QUEEN who traces to established sire W.D. Jacks, Terrific Challenge (Monmouth S L) and Star Of Gdansk (Curragh Tetrach S G3).
Miss Queen’s only four foals include the black type Winners Prince Of Light, Mandobi and Chateau Istana.
Chateau Istana is one of an ever growing number of Group Winners by Chief Crown’s Newmarket Dewhurst Stakes (G1) Winner GRAND LODGE which is best known in Australia as the sire of Grand Zulu (STC BMW S., G1), Shogun Lodge (AJC Queen Elizabeth S., G1; AJC Epsom H., G1) and the evergreen Freemason (TJ Smith Classic, G1, STC BMW S., G1 and Qld Derby G1).
THE RACEHORSE
A Winner of five races including stakes events at Royal Ascot and Doncaster in England as a juvenile and then in high prizemoney races in Hong Kong as a four-year-old, Chateau Istana was being readied for a group 1 sprint in Australia with Adelaide mentor Phillip Stokes. But Chateau Istana was injured and retired immediately. Oaklands Stud principal Neville Stewart said Chateau Istana was selected ahead of three other potential candidates because of his impressive bloodlines, conformation and performances. The athletic chestnut Chateau Istana (16HH) has been syndicated and supported by some of Queensland’s most influential breeders. Stewart said Chateau Istana had proven his mettle as a racehorse. He won the £40,000 Listed Royal Ascot Windsor Castle Stakes over five furlongs in the June of 2004, less than a month after capturing his maiden at Leicester. He added a third win in his opening season in the £70,000 Group 2 Doncaster Flying Childers Stakes in September, 2004. The following year he was transferred to Hong Kong and, racing as Chateau King Prawn, he won another two events over the specialist sprinters distance of 1000 metres. He opened his winning account in Hong Kong in November 2005, picking up HK$570,000 for his effort. He won again there in March, 2006, when the purse was also HK$570,000.
Chateau Istana'S FAMILY
Oaklands Studs principal Neville Stewart believes Chateau Istana will provide the ideal cross for most broodmares, particularly daughters of Danehill. "His genetic structure is close to perfect. He has Danzig in the third generation on the top side and is from a daughter of the champion sire Miswaki and also has Mount Hagen and Young Emperor on his dam’s side,” Stewart said. ”He was a good two-year-old and is an excellent type with a powerful hindquarter and great strength through his shoulder, beautiful head and eye and he has an ideal temperament for a stallion. “Chateau Istana has two things in abundance – spectacular quality as an individual and blistering speed and that’s what attracts good returns in the sale ring. “The fact that he was a Group 2 winning two-year-old lays claims to his superior sprinting ability, which he obviously gets from his pedigree because there is a lot of Nasrullah blood in his family. "He has similar credentials to Oaklands former champion stallion Iglesia. I hold as much expectation for Chateau Istana as I did for Iglesia. Both horses won a time honoured race as a two-year-old, both possess exceptional looks and have superior speed. “Chateau Istana also has similar credentials to Pure Theatre. Both were Winners in two countries and are related to Danzig. Pure Theatre has been very popular and his yearlings (oldest progeny) have sold for as much as $210,000 and that’s off a $5,000 service fee. “Chateau Istana has the potential to deliver similar results.” Stewart concluded. Magic Millions general manager David Chester said: “Chateau Istana had explosive speed and is one of the most handsome individuals I have ever inspected. He is a great addition to Queensland’s Oaklands Stud and I can’t wait to sell his youngsters.” Former Hong Kong trainer Ivan Allan, who played a role in transferring Chateau Istana from England to Hong Kong, is confident the stallion will make a positive impact in Australia.
